The city of Houston was founded in 1836. Named for the president of the Republic of Texas, General Sam Houston, the city was incorporated in 1837 and continued to grow throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of the railroad industry and the discovery of oil in the area. Houston’s deep-water port, opened by President Wilson in 1914, has served important roles in both war- and peacetime.
Some of Houston’s most notable landmarks include the Texas Medical Center and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. The Astrodome sports stadium has been called the “eighth wonder of the world.” Today, Houston is home to a population of 2.16 million people, making it the most populous city in Texas and the fourth most populous city in the U.S.
